Motivational Interviewing (MI) provides a framework for productive conversations. Through MI trainings and workshops, I help professionals who seek to motivate others toward any change. You will learn the MI method to engage in a trusting relationship, avoid or de-escalate emotional conversations, and guide a person or client to develop their own plan for change.  Research suggests that professionals who practice Motivational Interviewing consistently experience more resilience against “compassion fatigue” and increased feelings of confidence and acceptance in their work.

FAQs

  • I teach Motivational Interviewing to organizations such as correctional institutions, hospitals, and community education centers. I provide training for their staff with a variety of job functions (from front desk to clinician). Social work and Counseling agencies hire me to provide training, coaching, and feedback for their staff. I also provide technical assistance to agencies or organizations to build internal capacity for ongoing Motivational Interviewing practice. This can look like training staff to be Motivational Interviewing trainers within their organization or agency.

  • Workshops are designed to meet unique needs of the hiring agency and the roles of the employees being trained. The number of participants per workshop is capped at 24 unless otherwise negotiated. A day begins with introductions and engagement with the priorities and needs of the participants. Relevant information is shared in an interactive lecture format followed by an activity that encourages participants to perform the techniques, skills, or strategies of Motivational Interviewing. The activity is followed by debriefing: outcomes, takeaways, discoveries. Depending on the duration of the workshop, there may be several iterations of this structure. Workshops end with insights and takeaways of the participants. I share my contact information and links to my YouTube Channel where a collection of videos provides examples of the techniques and support ongoing learning.

  • For my private, small-group sessions: Northeast Portland, Oregon.

For all other options: Online is available. Willing to travel for in-person workshops, and travel expenses may incur.

“Therapists using motivational interviewing will be asking open questions about the client’s values and goals and how they are discrepant with current behavior, responding with reflections to convey a sense of understanding, avoiding arguments when encountering resistance, and conveying hope that change is possible.”

— Theresa Moyers & Stephen Rollnick, 2002
