hi, I’m janis crawford.

Learn about my journey to Spirit Life Wisdom, and how this practice came to be.

My journey

Though a bit older - and wiser - than in the picture here, I am as enthusiastic and passionate as ever about my calling in life. My journey has included many twists and turns within the greater dharma of helping people heal their mental health. Here are a few of my most special endeavors…

 Criminal Justice

  • After two years of working as a correctional officer, I left to continue my education.  I was re-hired as a therapist in the same institution and promoted to Program Coordinator of substance abuse treatment within the first two years.

  • As the Program Director, I designed and implemented the Treatment of Addictions and Criminal Thinking (TACT) program. TACT was so successful that the program was adopted at 4 other institutions.

  • I collaborated with prison administration with a proposal and successful integration of motivational interviewing into the Wyoming Department of Corrections pre-service academy.

 Clinical Consultation

  • Since 2001 I have been providing clinical supervision and adult learning opportunities  for correctional staff, medical staff, and licensed professional counseling interns.

  • In 2015 I began focusing on my career as a trainer, and have extensive experience running workshop trainings for human services professionals. Subjects include motivational interviewing, group facilitation skills, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

  • Since 2020, my career has adapted to online services.  In psychotherapy, many clients delve into deeper areas of personal growth and self-analysis from the privacy of their own homes. I am now experienced at facilitating effective virtual training as well as individual and group clinical supervision via zoom.

Knowledge and spirit are the beginning and end states of the learner.  They are opposite sides of a coin; knowledge informs spirit and spirit informs the evolution of knowledge.”

Training & Experience in Counseling & Psychotherapy

1997-2000 As an intern psychologist I provided individual therapy for adolescent and adult clients with various problems including depression, anxiety and psychosis.  I administered and interpreted both standardized and projective psychological testing instruments and conducted structured and informal interviews with child and adolescent victims and perpetrators of psychological and physical abuse for expert witness testimonies.

1998-2001 I facilitated individual therapy, didactic and interactive cognitive-behavioral group therapy and provided evaluation and counseling with inmates and their families.

2001-2005 I developed and implemented the Treatment of Addiction and Criminal Thinking (TACT) Program to service all correctional facilities in the state of Wyoming with substance abuse evaluation, cognitive behavioral therapy, and rational-emotive therapy.  During this period I led case consultations and facilitated cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic group therapy with groups of up to 15 inmates for 3-6 months at a time.

2005-2010 I received experiential training in the therapeutic community model and in motivational interviewing.  I facilitated therapeutic meetings and peer-led treatment groups as I maintained full caseloads in both female and male adult offender clients.

2010-2015 I was employed as Clinical Supervisor of the Providence Portland Chemical Dependency Stabilization Unit in Portland, Oregon.  My position at Providence offered opportunities to interact with clients, including motivational interventions, milieu and conflict management, and demonstrating group facilitation techniques to counseling staff.

2011-2016 I received training in depth psychotherapy at Pacifica Graduate Institute.  I completed all course work including case formulation and presentation.  My training includes both Freudian and Jungian theories and I am partial to Jungian Analysis.

2015-present I started a small business:  Janis Crawford LLC.  I have been providing individual psychotherapy, clinical supervision, consultation, motivational interviewing training, and program coordination under this small business name.

2017-present I am employed as an adjunct professor to teach Theories of Counseling and Motivational Interviewing for Portland Community College, addiction counseling department.  I grow and learn by teaching others.  My own skills and familiarity with various therapeutic techniques and methods benefit from engaging with learners.
